Media Literacy Week 2009
Media Literacy Week – October 4-‐10, 2009
Sponsored by Gateway Media Literacy Partners

Event Highlights:
St. Louis Community College- Meramec hosts Media Literacy Educator, Renee Hobbs
Media literacy educator and scholar, Renee Hobbs, took time away from her busy schedule at Temple University to accept GMLP’s invite to talk about Fair Use and Copyright, a hot, hot media literacy topic.
Thanks to St. Louis Community College-Meramec for this sponsorship, teachers and others interested in the ability to do more with copyrighted material, other than to be afraid of it, packed the auditorium on the St. Louis Community College campus. Specifically, with the enthusiasm and rigor for which Hobbs is known, the audience learned how to be more confident in using information in the classroom, information they may have been fearful of using because they thought they might be breaking the law. St. Louis’ own Mark Sableman, well-known copyright attorney, Thompson Coburn LLP, joined Hobbs in the afternoon, to expand on the topic, and worked well, together. The entire effort may be viewed on St. Louis Community College’s web site.
Lindenwood University Hosts Speakers from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education [DESE], and Media Literacy Expert Frank Baker
These two events offered teachers an opportunity to pursue CEUs, all in the name of media literacy education.

Dr. Sharon Hoge, Director, Curriculum and Literary Services for DESE presents at Lindenwood University
Dr. Sharon Hoge, Director of Curriculum and Literary Services, discussed the current media literacy standards in Missouri. She encouraged feedback and participation on DESE documents that could impact the future of the state standards.
After her presentation, Dr. Curt Fuchs, Curriculum Specialist demonstrated the free, online resources teachers and librarians could use in the classroom to help students find credible sources of information.
The following evening, participants returned for a workshop with Frank Baker. Mr. Baker spoke about advertising, photo manipulation, as well as techniques news media use to keep people tuned in.
