Gateway Media Literacy Partners and Becker Medical Library Present: Web Resources for Schools
Mostly K-12 librarians from many areas of the bi-state region, and health educators attended a half-day workshop, at no cost, October 26, courtesy of GMLP and its newest institutional member, Washington University School of Medicine’s Michael Becker Medical Library, where the new offering was held.
Program leaders, Becker librarians, Will Olmstadt and Judy Hansen, taught the school librarians and BJC Youth Outreach participants/health educators about reliable up-to-date and easy-to-navigate health literacy resources.
Olmstadt and Hansen who did an extraordinary job of integrating media literacy into their presentation. The program, entitled Web Resources for School Librarians: a program for Health Literacy,” demonstrated ways for the librarians to engage students, teachers and parents in health-care information and included the National Association for Media Literacy Education’s Core Principles of Media LiteracyEducation (CPMLE). In addition to being in the high-tech classroom, attendees learned how to use Becker’s state-of-the-art facilities, always available to the entire community, according to Olmstadt.
Also presenting, was Jennifer Ervin of BJC Youth Outreach who enlightened the librarians about tremendous resource materials that helps students seriously consider jobs in health, and also facilitate a better understanding of the variety of health professions, and what it takes–experience-and education-wise– to get these jobs. Ervin later gave gave a tour of BJC.
Becker Medical Library boasts of support for clinicians, bioinformatics, community and patient-education assistance, access to archives, rare books and scholarly communications, and its speaker series, “Becker on the Road.”
Program coordinates, Lynne Lang of BJC, Olmstadt and Hanson are pleased with the great attendance and positive evaluations and are planning to repeat the offering.
